CURRICULUM

History
History is taught within a programme of well-resourced and stimulating topics. The aim is to develop knowledge, understanding and key historical skills. Theme days and trips play an important part in this curriculum area.

Geography
This subject is developed through a series of interesting and well-planned topics. The children begin by exploring their immediate locality and then progress to national and global studies. The pupils benefit from an exciting range of field trips which enhance their learning.

Art and Design
These subject areas are a strength of our school. The children are given many opportunities to explore a wide range of activities designed to develop their abilities in this area. The school has its own kiln which is regularly used and has a dedicated art week each year.

PE
The children enjoy a wide range of activities including games, athletics, gymnastics, dance and team challenges. Swimming is taught in Year 4. We make full use of our extensive school playing fields.

PSHE and Citizenship
We aim to support and promote attitudes, practices and understanding conducive to good health and responsible behaviour. Sex education is taught in Years 3 and 5 in a way that is appropriate to the age of the children. Parents have the right to withdraw children from sex education lessons but in practice have never done so.

French
French is taught to children in Year 5. The emphasis is on speaking and understanding French. Our well planned course encourages children to have fun with foreign languages. We will look to spread this across the school in due course. Year 6 children have an opportunity to visit France as part of an organised school trip.

Music
During music lessons children learn rhythm and notation as well as having opportunities to sing and compose their own music. The local music centre offers tuition in orchestral instruments to interested pupils during the school day for an extra charge. Further information on this tuition is available from the school office.

Religious Education
All children have the opportunity to take part in collective worship every day. This is non-denominational but has a broadly Christian emphasis.

We concentrate on developing positive moral values such as kindness, honesty and caring. Links are often made to our PSHE and Citizenship programme. We aim to give children some knowledge of the Bible and of Christian beliefs and also to develop their awareness and respect for the customs and beliefs of other religions.

Parents have a right to withdraw their children from RE lessons or assemblies if they so wish. Alternative arrangements will be made to supervise any pupils who are withdrawn.
