CURRICULUM

Foundation Stage and Reception
We very much practice an active “hands on” learning through play method to progress through the early learning goals. The children progress through the six strands of personal, social and emotional development, communication, language and literacy, mathematical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical and creative development. These areas then feed into the subjects taught in key stages one and two.

English
English is central to our whole school curriculum because it is the key to communication, thinking and learning in all subjects. We follow the National Curriculum and National Literacy Strategy guidelines in our teaching.

In the Infant Department we use the Jolly Phonics programme to develop the phonic skills necessary to ensure good progress in reading and spelling.

All our children are taught reading skills in groups in a well structured way. In addition we provide a wide range of texts for individual reading both through school and class book collections. We have a library which children may access during the school day. Books may also be taken home from our fiction and reference section.

Writing is modelled by the teachers and children have access to a range of writing frames and resources. With the installation of interactive whiteboards in each classroom children will have access to a large range of stimuli.

Mathematics
Our aim is for mathematical learning to be creative, pleasurable and challenging for our children. Through the National Numeracy Strategy we develop knowledge, understanding and skills, ensuring continuity and progression for each child. From Year Two children are taught in a maths set based on their ability across the year group. We constantly reinforce maths as an exciting series of new discoveries.

Science
Our overall aim is to encourage all children to develop an interest in science and an enthusiasm for investigative work. We aim to achieve a balance between the acquisition of knowledge and understanding and the development of key skills. The children are involved in practical tasks to put their knowledge and skills into practice and enable them to become familiar with a wide range of equipment and materials.

ICT
Our aim for ICT is to encourage the use of computers to practice a variety of skills in order to develop confidence and competence with ICT processes and equipment. Children are given opportunities to use ICT on a regular basis to support their learning in other areas of the curriculum.

Each class has access to their own computers and have regular visits to the ICT suites. Each class has an interactive whiteboard and the use of ICT is incorporated into every facet of school life.
